THOMAS JOHANSEN

CONTEMPORARY DANCE TEACHER & CHOREOGRAPHER

Thomas Johansen was born in Oslo on May 14 1979.

From the age of 10 he was practicing baton twirling which opened his interest to dance. When he was 19 he entered the Ballet Academy for professional dancers in Gothenburg, Sweden. During three years of education he trained several styles of contemporary dance, classical ballet, jazz, tap dance and acrobatics. After B.A he joined European Youth Ballet as a soloist and he danced internationally with New Dance Drama. Since then he has been dancing and twirling in magic shows, Ultimate Dance Company, several times on TV, various dance festivals in Europe, America, Greenland, Japan and three years in the dance company Skånes Dance Theatre(SDT) in Malmo, Sweden. Thomas has danced major lead roles such as Macbeth, Romeo (Romeo & Juliet) Abraham (Abraham and Isaac), Jesus, Hamlet and Buddha. This has given him a lot of experience, strength and maturity as a dancer, but also as a person.

Recently Thomas has been on tour with the contemporary dance performance “Melting Ice” by Birgitte Bauer Nilsen and the contemporary jazz performance “Kaboom” by Subjazz.

Thomas style is fluid, energetic and expressive. He loves the contrast between soft fluidity, long lines, power and attack.

His classes are often based on choreographic work, where he explores these elements with musicality.

This gives the dancers a chance to dance a lot and develop personal style and qualities.
